Effects of Barbiturates on Pulmonary and Systemic Haemodynamics

Abstract
Pulmonary and systemic haemodynamic effects of intravenously administered thiamylal and pentobarbital were investigated in intact, unsedated, instrumented dogs. The predominant changes produced by pentobarbital were tachycardia, decreased stroke volume, and late increases in systemic pressure and vascular resistance. The predominant effect of thiamylal was an increase in systemic and pulmonary vascular resistance.
