Single-Dose Treatment for Ascaris Infection with Piperazine Citrate; with a Study of the Egg-Parasite Ratio *

Abstract
Summary Thirty-three patients infected with Ascaris lumbricoides were treated with a single dose of piperazine citrate; those weighing 33 kg and above received 6 grams in two divided portions and those weighing under 33 kg received one dose of 3 grams of the citrate. Expulsion of worms occurred in 87% of cases and radical cure occurred in 79%. Except for vomiting which occurred in only 2 patients no side-effects were recorded. It was possible to evaluate the egg-parasite ratio in the 26 patients cured. This was found to be close to previous reports by earlier investigators and averaged approximately 223,000 eggs per female worm per 24 hours or 1,500 eggs per gram per female ascaris.
