Granule formulations of molluscicides for use in developing countries

Abstract
Granule formulations of molluscicides may be superior to conventional sprays in many situations but they are not available commercially. Methods are described for making granules using Bayluscide® 70% wettable powder mixed with gelatin, wheat-flour or sand. In the laboratory all three types produced rapid mortality of Biomphalaria glabrata at application rates equivalent to 1 mg active ingredient per litre. Field trials were conducted with wheat-flour and sand-granules containing 5% clonitralide, and both were effective in marshes, seepages and ditches at less cost than conventional sprays. Lower cost and simplicity of manufacture make sand-granules the first choice for general use but hardened gelatin-granules may be useful if residual properties can be exploited.
