Abstract
Aedes lateralis preferred black, blue, red, tan, green, yellow, and white in the order named, whereas A. dorsalis preferred black, blue, red, green, tan, yellow, and white. A group of mixed spp. consisting of A. hexodontus, A. communis, and A. aboriginis preferred black, red, tan, blue, green, yellow, and white. Mosquito attack can be greatly reduced by the use of nonattractive clothing colors, such as white and yellow, in areas where these spp. are present. The color preferences of A. dorsalis follow the same sequence as the spectral reflectance values of the test colors in a wave-length range from 400 to 750 mju, whereas the preferences of A. lateralis follow the sequence in the 254- to 750-m/x range. These correlations suggest that colors are chosen on the basis of their spectral reflectances, and that these spp. lack the ability to distinguish colors.
