Abstract
The comparative oral thyroxin-like activity of physiol. range doses of DL-thyroxine and natural and synthetic thyroproteins was measured using the goiter-prevention method. DL-thyroxin demonstrated half of its parenteral activity when admd. orally as the soluble Na salt. 4 natural thyroid prepns. assayed 70%, 71%, 72% and 98% of their parenteral potency. This activity was greater than could be attributed to the L-thyroxine content of the test substances when compared with parenterally admd. thyroxine. Synthetic thyroproteins showed only 1/7 of their parenteral activity, indicating poor absorption from the small intestine. Keywords
