Abstract
Men [57] and women [43] alcoholics were followed up for 6 mo. after discharge from a 4-6-wk inpatient treatment program. Positive correlations were found between time since last drink and 5 variables describing participation in aftercare activities. Cross-lagged panel analysis demonstrated the possibility of negative feedback. Negative correlations between treatment outcomes at 3 mo. following discharge and participation in aftercare activities at 6 mo. suggest that aftercare during the first 3 mo. is a determinant of favorable outcome, while from 3-6 mo. following discharge the patients having the most favorable outcome stop participating in aftercare activities.
