Abstract
A method was descr. for separation of gas exchange of the 2 lungs and simultaneous measurement in each of alveolar pO2 and pCO2, 02 uptake and CO2 output. Using this method the left lung of the dog was subjected to various mixtures of O2 in N2 and CO2 in air. When the right lung is maintained on 30% O2 and the left lung is made hypoxic there is a local vasocon-striction in the latter which varies with the degree of unilateral hypoxia. With the left lung breathing N2, 11% of the pulmonary flow goes through this lung, in contrast to control values of 40%. If, on the other hand, the right lung is maintained on air, the hypoxic left lung will constrict less for a given alveolar pO2. Unilateral hypercarbia does not alter the blood flow. Keywords
