Infants of Gestational Diabetic Mothers

Abstract
THE DIABETIC pregnancy and its effect on the fetus and newborn infant has been the subject of considerable interest.1-7Diabetic mothers have a high incidence of abortions and stillbirths,4,5and their infants have an increased incidence of neonatal problems such as idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome,6,7hypoglycemia,8,9and hyperbilirubinemia.10,11An increased incidence of hypocalcemia,12,13congenital malformations,14and renal vein thrombosis15,16has also been reported. In an attempt to determine which of these abnormalities are related to the abnormality in carbohydrate metabolism alone and which are related to the other complications of prolonged diabetes mellitus, the incidence of these problems in infants of gestational diabetic mothers17-19has been studied.
