Abstract
The classical criterion for the stability of cubic crystals under constant hydrostatic pressure is distinguished from the notional criterion of stability introduced by Born. Although the latter has been widely used in the literature, theoretical computations demonstrate appreciable quantitative and qualitative divergences between the criteria. The computations are made within the framework of a crystal model that is both mathematically tractable and sufficiently realistic for the intended purpose. Keywords
