Abstract
Approximately 10% of patients admitted to hospitals in the Western world acquire an infection of varying severity. The economic burden of these nosocominal infections is substantial and often underestimated because of the lack of sensitivity of the detction methods. A number of surveillance strategies are available, but the method chosen often depends on limited resources and often falls short of what is required. This review assesses the various surveillance strategies and highlights the value of molecular technology in distinguishing between endogenous and exogeneous infections. Keywords
