Abstract
A method for finding the electron states in a thin crystalline layer with realistic surface potential is given. The method gives good agreement with the computer calculations of Schulte and Bross (1972). In many realistic cases the eigenvalues of mod k mod (k=crystal momentum) in a layer of thickness Na(a=length of unit cell are close to mod k mod = pi n/(N+1)a(n=1,2,...,N). The results are applied to the spectra of InSb films and of linear organic dye molecules.
