Orientation Residual Stresses and Birefringence in Injection Molding

Abstract
A simple mathematical model for predicting residual stresses in injection‐molded parts has been constructed. The use of a nonlinear viscoelasticconstitutive equation allows the model to yield better quantitative results than previously obtained. The model fails to predict the existence of birefringence along the midplane of the molded part, which is thought to be due to inhomogeneous cooling (i.e., thermal stress).
