Abstract
Four field-scale landfill cover test cells have been constructed in order to facilitate a comparison of the field performance of sludge and clay hydraulic barriers. Two covers contain clay as the barrier material, one contains a paper mill primary sludge, and one contains a paper mill combined (primary and biological) sludge. One of the clay cells is designed to allow for a field verification study of the Hydrologic Evaluation of Landfill Performance (HELP) model. Both sludge cells have produced smaller volumes of seepage and greater volumes of runoff than the clay cells to date. Calculated barrier hydraulic conductivities for the paper mill sludges are somewhat lower than those values calculated for the clay.
