Abstract
The determination of the contribution of the specific mass shift to optical isotope shifts had long been a problem which has recently been solved by comparing muonic with optical shifts. An alternative method is presented, based entirely on optical measurements, which depends upon the bunching observed in isotope shift plots. For neodymium the methods lead to different results. Reasons for preferring the 'bunching' to the 'muonic' results are given.
