Biochemical and Morphologic Evidence for the Presence of an RNA Tumor Virus in Pulmonary Carcinoma of Sheep (Jaagsiekte) 2

Abstract
Biochemical and morphologic evidence is given for the presence of an RNAtumor virus in lung tumors of sheep. The tumors contained particles with a reverse transcriptase and a 60-70S RNA. These biochemical features of RNAtumor viruses were not found in lung tissue of normal sheep but were observed in the histologically diagnosed “normal” lung tissue of animals with carcinoma in the contralateral lung. Typical type-C virus particles were observed by electron microscopy in tumor extracts but not in extracts of lung tissues from normal sheep.
