Abstract
Intact or hypophysectomized rats were given 8 daily injections of stilbestrol or estradiol. The daily doses were 4, 20, 100, 500 or 1000 ug. A direct dose response rela-tionship was demonstrated in the ovarian weights of hypophysectomized rats. The larger doses of stilbestrol trebled ovarian weights and the larger doses of estradiol doubled ovarian weights. No definite pattern of response was evident in the intact rats except that estrogen at any dose increased ovarian weights. Histologically the response to estrogen was granulosal proliferation and growth of many prevesicular follicles. Apparently, ovarian weight increments resulting from increasing estrogen doses are reflections of enhanced follicular growth. Keywords
