Value of Determination of Serum Fibrin–Fibrinogen Degradation Products in Acute Myocardial Infarction

Abstract
Serum fibrin–fibrinogen degradation products were examined in 140 consecutive patients admitted to a coronary care unit. Most patients with acute myocardial infarction had serum fibrin–fibrinogen degradation products amounting to less than 20 μg per ml. in early stages of the disease. None of the patients with uncomplicated acute myocardial infarction had serum fibrin–fibrinogen degradation products amounting to more than 40 μg. per ml. It was found that the severity of myocardial infarction, elevation of various “cardiac enzymes,” and increased serum fibrin–fibrinogen degradation products are related. Elevated serum fibrin–fibrinogen degradation products may be a grave prognostic sign.
