Abstract
Tomato plants showed a 12% increase in dry weight with the addition of 1 milligram atom of Na per liter of culture solution. Three microgram atoms of Si and 3 microgram atoms of Al per liter of solution gave no increase in yield. Al was not measured in the plant material. Na and Si were present at levels of 0.09 and 0.15 microgram atoms per gram dry weight of tissue, respectively, when these elements were not intentionally added. Na and Si are therefore not required by the tomato plant in amounts greater than 0.10 and 0.20 microgram atoms per gram dry weight, respectively.
