Abstract
RESULTS from the Welsh Youth Health Survey show a fall in experimentation with smoking between 1986 and 1990, but little change in smoking prevalence. Other data show that cigarettes are still widely avail able for purchase by the under-16s. These data pro vided the background against which Health for All targets on young people and smoking were developed for Wales, and reinforce the need for further work to promote smoke-free lifestyles and environments. Among the initiatives currently being undertaken by the Health Promotion Authority for Wales are support for non-smoking policies in schools, Smokebusters Cymru and addressing the issue of tobacco sales to the under-16s.
