Recent Advances in Treatment of Organ Tuberculosis

Abstract
Tuberculosis continues to exact a greater annual toll in lives and disability than any other communicable disease. With proper antibacterial therapy and surgical intervention, when indicated, recovery can be expected in over 90% of the cases. Since tuberculosis is often first diagnosed and treated by private physicians, this paper deals with recent advances in the management of tuberculosis in its various forms. The merits of antituberculosis agents, their limitations, and side reactions are considered. Drug regimens, indications for surgical intervention and adrenocorticosteroids as adjunctive treatment are discussed. Recognition of the importance of antibacterial prophylactic therapy has increased recently and wider acceptance of this principle is recommended.
