Abstract
The social process of diagnosing senility, the value of conceptualizing senility as a social role, the social consequences of the senile label and some foci for social research in senility and other mental disorders are discussed. Suggestions for research are: learning “which older people living in what social situations are brought by whom” for diagnosis and service; and learning the social consequences of the label senile for the older person and for those who bring him for diagnosis and treatment. Keywords
