Frequent Isolation of HIV-1 from the Blood of Patients Receiving Zidovudine (AZT) Therapy

To the Editor: Strains of HIV-1 that are relatively resistant to zidovudine (AZT) have been isolated from the blood of patients receiving therapy with that drug.1 However, the relations between in vitro sensitivity or resistance of HIV-1 to zidovudine, in vivo HIV-1 viremia, and therapeutic efficacy are poorly understood.
