Abstract
The crystal-field parameters for the Tm3+ ion in the YVO4 and LiYF4 lattices are used to find the temperature variation of the Schottky specific heat, paramagnetic susceptibility and anisotropy, and the quadrupole splitting. The crystal fields are discussed in terms of ionicities of the systems and observed nephelauxetic effect, and the parameters are appraised in the framework of angular overlap and superposition models. Keywords
