An analysis of compositional data on plates in an Ag-44.9Cd at.% alloy

Abstract
When an Ag-44.9Cd at.% alloy is quenched it undergoes a transformation which is sometimes called `bainite' by virtue of the fact that the plates appear to be different in composition from the parent phase. The plates could, on the other hand, form without diffusion, the cadmium partitioning into the matrix after formation. An attempt is made here to determine whether the reported changes in composition of the product phase could be a consequence of diffusion after growth, using a finite difference model to follow the partitioning behaviour. The results demonstrate that, with the diffusion data available, it is not possible to support either martensite transformation or partitioning during growth.
