THE NEUROPATHY OF MULTIPLE MYELOMA

Abstract
Polyneuropathy in multiple myeloma, not dependent on compression by tumor tissue, was studied in 5 cases. The polyneuropathy appeared as a symmetrical, atrophic, areflexic, sensorimotor affection of the legs or arms. The cerebrospinal fluid protein level was elevated in 4 patients and in 3 the symptoms preceded those of multiple myeloma. There was degeneration of both axis cylinder and myelin sheath of the peripheral nerves in the more distal segments.
