Abstract
The clinical and histological aspects of syringoma are surveyed and a relationship between the theories concerning the histiogenesis of this tumor are presented. From the histological examination of 56 syringtomata of the eyelids, often with serial sections, it has been possible to show the degenerative and involutional changes in the stroma and in the parenchyma of the tumor which have not previously been observed. A relationship between the external root sheaths, the hairs themselves, and the tumor is demonstrated. It is concluded that the place of origin of the tumor is situated in anlagen of the apocrine glands and that it must be regarded as a naevus of the apocrine glands of atavistic origin. Keywords
