Abstract
Adult female rats consume more saccharin than their male littermates in a 2-bottle preference situation. This sexually dimorphic taste pattern 1st appears after puberty and is the result of a large postpubertal increase in the females' saccharin preference (SP), which is only partially under hormonal control. During pseudopregnancy, pregnancy and lactation SP is diminshed; this change is independent of the increase in food and fluid intake during these conditions. The endocrine basis for SP is compared and contrasted with that for general activity, eating, and estrous behavior. (31 ref.) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)Keywords
