Abstract
Exchange scattering has been directly observed in the excitation of the state of mercury by measuring the spin flip of polarized electrons. Between threshold and 8 eV exchange scattering dominates, resulting in a reversal of the direction of polarization of the scattered electrons. Above 8 eV the influence of exchange decreases rapidly for scattering in the forward direction.
