Abstract
Mixed cultures of biochemical mutants of E. coll were found to contain a small proportion of cells exhibiting recombinations of the nutritional and phage-resistance characters. The possibilities of spontaneous mutations and of directed mutations (or transformations) as the source of these types are considered, but are believed unlikely. Therefore, it was concluded that a sort of sexual fusion occurs, accounting for the apparent recombination of genetic factors. Keywords
