Abstract
The ontogeny of lymphocyte populations in the mouse embryo using organ culture techniques was investigated. B [bone marrow-derived] lymphocytes were generated independently in the fetal liver, spleen and bone marrow, while T [thymus-derived] lymphocytes were generated in the thymus. The structural and functional properties of developing lymphocytes were characterized in these organs. Fetal lymphocytes differed from adult lymphocytes in a number of important respects. This may have a bearing on the generation of tolerance to self antigens.
