Effect of Complete Hepatic Vein Ligation on Portal Pressures and Ascites Formation in Dogs with Porta-Caval Shunts

Abstract
A successful exptl. technic has been developed to establish complete occlusion of the hepatic vein in the dog. It is necessary to have a porta-caval shunt in order to permit such dogs to survive. A significant elevation of the portal vein pressure occurred in 66% of these dogs. Ascites was observed in 53%, but could not be correlated directly with increased portal pressure, decreased serum protein or pathological changes in the liver.
