Abstract
The application of derivative ultraviolet spectrophotometry to the simultaneous determination of nitrate and nitrite is described. The second-derivative absorbances at 223.2 and 215.8 nm are used for the respective determinations of nitrate and nitrite, which show isosbestic points at 215.8 and 223.2 nm, respectively. The procedure is non-destructive, and does not require any separation step, chemical manipulation or solution of equations. Detection limits as low as 4.5 × 10–6 mol l–1 for nitrate and 4.0 × 10–6 mol l–1 for nitrite have been obtained. Keywords
