Abstract
THERE is abundant and convincing evidence that TCDD (dioxin, or 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-pdioxin) is an extremely potent carcinogen and general toxin in rodents, perhaps the most potent yet tested. Human exposure is therefore regulated strictly and at considerable cost, both direct and indirect. TCDD as such is not a commercial product, but traces are produced in the manufacture of other products despite efforts to prevent their appearance. For example, TCDD has been the chemical of greatest concern in exposure to the defoliant Agent Orange, although it was present only as a sparse contaminant (a few parts per million at worst, . . .Keywords
