The subject of syphilis in the negro is one which has never been thoroughly studied and concerning which there are still many disputes, caused largely by prejudice and broad statements and the lack of careful investigation. Statistics on diseases in the negro are very meager, and on the subject of syphilis are almost entirely lacking. The rule has been to publish personal opinions, often totally unaccompanied by evidence of any kind. At the start it should be pointed out that there are two distinct classes of negroes, just as there are two classes of every other race, and that the same rules cannot possibly apply to both classes.
