Abstract
This article briefly outlines the history of communication studies in Australia, emphasizing that this history spans only thirty years. The significance to communication studies of the 1987 revolution in the structure of Australian higher education is outlined, and predictions for the future attempted. Government policy, the economic climate, Anglo‐American influences, and the impact of Australian cultural diversity are shown to have affected communication studies. Particular attention is given to contemporary emphasis upon Aboriginal and Asia‐Pacific issues.
