Abstract
Previous work in generating explanations from advicegivingsystems has demonstrated that a cooperative systemcan and should infer the immediate goals and plansof an utterance (or discourse segment) and formulate aresponse in light of these goals and plans. The claim ofthis paper is that a cooperative response may also haveto address a user's overall goals, plans, and preferencesamong those goals and plans.
