Sclerema Neonatorum

Abstract
A case report of an infant who died with sclerema neonatorum is presented. A detailed biochemical study revealed an unusually high ratio of saturated to unsaturated fatty acids (56.8:43.2) in the subcutaneous triglycerides of the sclerematous infant. Oleic (C18:1) acid was present in normal amounts. Several alternative hypotheses for explaining the sclerematous process are discussed.
