Abstract
The enzyme system, phenylalanine hydroxylase, is deficient in the livers of individuals with phenylpyruvic oligophrenia. This enzyme system is also inactive in the livers of fetal rats, and in the livers of one-day. old rats. No stimulative effect resulted from the addition of excessive amounts of reduced or oxidized pyridine nucleo-tides. However, the level of activity of the liver of the adult animal is attained within a few days of life. When homogenates from the livers of young animals were dialyzed there was a 48 to 81% reduction in emzyme activity in contrast to a 17 to 48% reduction in the activity of adult liver. Keywords
