Abstract
The combination frequencies of carbonyl vibrations in solution in the 4000 cm.–1 region have been determined for a number of phosphorus-bridged dinuclear metal carbonyls and for a related compound in which two metals are held together by a simple, direct metal–metal bond. The results show that these spectra can be used to assess symmetry and furnish evidence for metal–metal bonding, as predicted by the theory presented here.
