Abstract
Extract Madam:— There is currently considerable interest in the effects of the ryegrass endophyte upon animal performance and pasture production. Recent research has resulted in the isolation of the lolitrem neurotoxins (3) Gallagher, R.T. , Hawkes, A.D. , Steyn, P.S. and Vleggaar, R. 1984. Tremorgenic neurotoxins from perennial ryegrass causing Ryegrass Staggers disorder of livestock: Structure elucidation of Lotilrem B. J. Chem. Soc. Chem. Commun., : 614–616. [Google Scholar] and the Argentine stem weevil feeding deterrent peramine (6) Rowan, D.D. , Hunt, M.B. and Gaynor, D.L. 1986. Peramine, a novel insect feeding deterrent from ryegrass infected with the endophyte Acremonium loliae. J. Chem. Soc. Chem. Commun., : 935–936. We now wish to report the occurrence in endophyte infected ryegrass of a third group of bioactive compounds; the ergopeptine alkaloids which have been detected in ryegrass stubble using tandem mass spectrometry.
