Abstract
Improved diets, health, employment, and literacy for the majority in poor countries can produce a sense of security and hence fewer births. The USA could contribute substantial aid with only minor reduction in its standard of living. Hardin's “lifeboat” metaphor is oversimplified, misguided, and misleading.Keywords
