Abstract
A procedure for computing approximate solutions of the boundary layer equations for a neutrally stratified atmosphere is described. The approximation equations, which are derived using perturbation expansion theory, are valid for cases when the cross-isobaric flow is small. The first approximation equations are integrated analytically and then applied to cases for which the gradient flow is either straight or curved. Comparison of the approximations with numerical solutions of the exact equations indicates that the approximations are generally useful under normal conditions of flow near the surface of the earth.
