DYNAMICS OF COMPACTIFICATION IN EINSTEIN-YANG-MILLS THEORIES

Abstract
We study the evolution of the universe in multi-dimensional theories with gauge fields at the stage when the process of compactification of extra dimensions takes place. It is shown that this process does not drive the four-dimensional inflationary expansion. The conditions for the existence of stable compactifying solutions are found. However, we find that in a wide interval of initial data, the evolution of the system does not lead to the formation of compact extra dimensions.
