A Comparison of Some House Fly Bioassay Methods1

Abstract
The house fly, Musca domestica L., has been used to compare some bioassay methods involving DDT as the standard insecticide, male, female, and a mixture of male and female flies, topical and film applications of DDT, and two bioassay designs. The results of these experiments were judged on the basis of assay validity, sensitivity, and efficiency. The most satisfactory procedure resulted from the use of 4-day-old female flies, topical application, and a 4X4 design composed of four 50-fly replicates for each of four graded doses of DDT. A computational protocol illustrates the use of the minimum logit chi-square method to obtain estimates of LDjq values and their reliability.
