Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus (50,000 organisms)in 0.05 ml. of saline, injd. into the rabbit''s anterior chamber, caused a destructive panophthalmitis within 48 hrs. If subconjunctival or retrobulbar penicillin (1,000,000 U.) was given 4 hrs., and repeated 24 hrs., after introduction of organisms, the infection cleared rapidly; but if therapy was not started until 24 hrs. after onset of infection, recovery was slow and often incomplete. Intravitreal injn. of the organisms caused a destructive panophthalmitis unless the penicillin was admd. within 4 hrs. of the infection. On the whole, the subconjunctival route was more effective then the retrobular one.
