Abstract
Experiments are described in which the dorsal column pathway and the lateral cutaneous pathway were cut bilaterally in the spinal cord of nembutalized cats. Adequate stimulation (pressure or pinching of the skin or pressure on muscles) in peripheral fields below the lesion evoked generalized cortical arousal. This effect is shown to be mediated by a ventral pathway activated by flexor reflex afferents from a bilateral receptive field. Keywords
