Frequency of Excisions and Yields of Malignant Skin Tumors in a Population-Based Screening Intervention of 360 288 Whole-Body Examinations

Abstract
Worldwide, the incidence of skin cancer has risen dramatically during the past 10 to 30 years.1 With the aim to reduce the burden of skin cancer, different screening activities have been conducted in many European countries and overseas during recent years.2-5 In 1999, the Euromelanoma campaign began in Belgium (http://www.euromelanoma.org), with free skin cancer screening offered once a year during “Euromelanoma Day.” Almost 30 European countries participate in “Euromelanoma Week” and offer skin cancer screening by dermatologists at specialized clinics to anyone who has a suspicious-looking skin lesion.6 The “Euromelanoma Weeks” are accompanied by mass media campaigns that have successfully attracted many individuals at risk for skin cancer.5,7
