INFLAMMATORY LESIONS OF THE COLON

Abstract
The generally recognized inflammatory diseases of the colon are appendicitis, tuberculosis, actinomycosis, radiation stricture, lymphogranuloma, chronic ulcerative colitis and diverticulitis. Obviously it is impossible to discuss all of these in any great detail in this short time. Therefore most of the time will be utilized in discussion of the more difficult and distressing ones, namely chronic ulcerative colitis and acute and chronic diverticulitis. Appendicitis is the most common inflammatory disease of the colon. Certainly, every one agrees that the treatment is surgical—the earlier the better. The optimum time for operation in the delayed case depends on the judgment of the individual surgeon. Yet two things are quite apparent in spite of constant teaching: 1. The diagnosis is not made early enough. 2. The mortality is still too high, chiefly because of delayed recognition.
