An Ar valence-shell study by asymmetric (e, 2e) experiments

Abstract
The Ar valence shell has been studied by an asymmetric (e, 2e) experiment at 1 keV incident energy. The angular correlations for the transitions to the 3p-1 (15.8 eV) and 3s-1 (29.3 eV) states of the Ar+ ion as well as the binding-energy spectrum in the region between 27-47.5 eV have been measured. The chosen kinematical conditions, close to the Bethe ridge, select impulsive ionisations. The asymmetric kinematics are shown to be suitable for momentum spectroscopy purposes provided the relative velocity of the final unbound electrons is large. This work also reports on the first investigation of the satellite structures in the binding-energy spectrum performed in such an asymmetric geometry.Keywords
