It is suggested that subsistence farming of cereal crops in Africa requires about 0.4 ha per head under cultivation each year. In Katsina all the cultivable soils are heavily farmed, and agriculture is almost sedentary; conditions are compared with those at Mokwa where shifting cultivation is practised.
